November saw a two-week period without deaths, after a spike in deaths that began in late July, resulting in double-digit deaths each month through October. While this number has fallen, the services are still experiencing one of the most dangerous periods of the pandemic, having seen just one or two deaths for most of 2020 and the first half of 2021.

As of Wednesday, 69% of the total force was fully vaccinated - 1,588,965 soldiers - and another 326,967 or 14% received the first of two doses.

Wednesday also marks the deadline for vaccinations for active duty military, leaving the Navy Reserve and Marine Corps until Dec. 28 to complete, and the Army Reserve and National Guard until June 30 to comply.

All services have issued guidelines stating that those who refuse vaccination will be marked in some way, followed by forced separation. The Air Force confirmed on Tuesday that it had fired its first 27 non-compliant aircraft, all of which were still in service on their first registration.

Data showed the United States passed half a million deaths yesterday and despite the positive trend in vaccines and case numbers, a University of Washington model suggests the death toll will rise to 589,000 by early June. 500,000 dead is a hard number to fathom, but it is equivalent to the number of Americans who died in three major wars.

Three service members died from complications of COVID-19 between Oct. 13 and Oct. 20, according to the latest Pentagon data, bringing the death toll for October to Oct. 11.

The deaths reflect a continuing trend among soldiers that began in late July and has since more than doubled the number of deaths from COVID-19. The latest update, however, shows fewer deaths than in any week since August, with new cases falling for the second straight week.

The service reported a total of 248,865 cases, with 1,282 new reports between October 13 and October 20. The previous week saw 863, a sharp drop from previous weeks, where new cases peaked above 4,000 a week in August and slowly began to fall later in September.

The trend reflects the course of the pandemic across the country, as an unprecedented increase in cases at the end of the summer began to decline. This also corresponds to the increase in the number of vaccinated members.

"None of the service members who died from COVID-19 were fully vaccinated," Maj. Charlie Dietz confirmed to the Military Times on Wednesday, although one received the first of two doses of the regimen. "With increased vaccination rates across the police force, we hope these tragedies will soon end."

Navy and Marine Corps personnel have until Nov. 28 for active duty and Dec. 28 for reservists. The Navy announced Monday that it will establish a special board to handle the separation of sailors who refuse vaccinations.

The military has a longer deadline, giving active duty soldiers until Dec. 15 to get fully vaccinated and reserves until June 30.

Of the 39 deaths reported since August, 19 — or 49 percent — were among soldiers in the Army Reserve and National Guard, though they make up about 20 percent of the military. Since the pandemic began, they have accounted for 26 of the 70 total deaths, or 37 percent.
