co detector for aircraft

Co Detector For Aircraft - Well, it's time for a quick flashback to the Human Performance section of your PPL exams. Remember learning about how firewall forward exhaust leaks can enter the cabin?

The problem gas in question is carbon monoxide (CO), a dangerous, poisonous gas that has no smell or taste and cannot be seen.

Like oxygen, it enters the body through the lungs when you breathe. CO competes with oxygen by binding to hemoglobin, the main vehicle of oxygen transport within red blood cells. Compounding the problem is that hemoglobin has a 210 times greater affinity for CO than oxygen, and its effects are cumulative. A day of flying several legs, even stopping for fresh air, is no protection against CO poisoning if there is an exhaust leak.

Tent Heater Options

With CO at 5-10% of piston aircraft engine exhaust, if leaked exhaust gets into the cabin - especially through cabin heat, that's bad news for the body.

The health effects of CO depend on the concentration and length of exposure, as well as the individual's health status. CO concentrations are measured in parts per million (ppm) – and 35 ppm is considered the maximum continuous exposure for adults over any 8-hour period.

Most people experience no symptoms from prolonged exposure to CO levels of 1 to 70 ppm, but some heart patients may experience increased chest pain. As CO levels rise and exceed 70 ppm, symptoms become more noticeable and may include headaches, fatigue, and nausea.

A constant CO concentration of 200 ppm causes dizziness, 400 ppm is life-threatening after three hours, while at 800 ppm you will become unconscious within three hours and likely die soon after.

Ntsb Calls For Carbon Monoxide Alerting Requirement

The most common method of detecting CO in the cockpit is the familiar stick-on plastic card with a chemically sensitive spot that darkens from orange to black, usually attached to the corner of the instrument panel or to the cockpit sidewall. How many times have you looked at one and thought to yourself that the stain looks darker than it should be?

After some airplanes with indoor digital CO detection units velcroed into the footwell area, I was curious to try digital measurement of CO in the cabin, so googled for detectors. I decided to try four units, the FireAngel CO-9D, a home detector for the home, plus the Testo 317, the Omnitron CO and the Crowcon clip.

S Cessna 182, ambient cabin air during cruise measured about 2 ppm, when the cabin heat was turned on, it increased to 8-10 ppm. Apparently no leaks - good news!

On the ground, we tested the units in free airflow at 1,200 rpm, 3 feet behind the exhaust outlet. Kraukon and Testo consistently measured around 230-250ppm, FireAngel at 262ppm, while Omnitron seemed to vary slightly more at 150-200ppm.

When we did the outside exhaust test, with the rest of the unit on the passenger seat in the cabin with the door open, it was clear that the CO level increased as the slipstream pushed the exhaust into the cabin. Readings of 35-40ppm were observed.

A fresh CO card was also used throughout the test, to ensure the reviewer was still breathing clean air!

The Testo and Omnitron allowed for easy user level setting, but this was not possible on the Crowcon without a docking station, which could be a problem as the low and high warning level alarms are set at 30ppm.

FireAngel has no option for user settings, but has a sensible set of pre-programmed level and time settings that work in a cockpit environment. Kraukon has a fixed battery life of two years and cannot be replaced. The same applies to the Fire Angel, but its battery lasts seven years. The Testo and Omnitron used replaceable AAA batteries.

Kraukon and Fireangel are the units with the most alarms. The Crowcon had three highly visible warning lights and a vibrate function to add to its warning capabilities.

Overall, each of the components demonstrated to be an efficient tool for CO detection. In my opinion, the FireAngel represents better value for money if you can find a home for a unit of its size (120 x 70 x 40 mm), while the Testo is the most versatile measuring device and has a slimmer form factor.

I kept a fresh CO detector card on hand during the test, which indicated no change at any time. The long exposure it takes for the color to change, I hope the day I rely on one of them to tell there's a leak, I hope I'm not too tired to spot the color change...

This panel mounted CO detector is FAA certified and authorized for GA aircraft under the Non-Required Safety Equipment (NORSEE) endorsement, requiring only a 'minor alteration' logbook entry by the engineer.

It sounds an alarm when CO levels above 50 parts per million (ppm) are detected. A loud 85db audible alarm sounds and an orange warning LED flashes when CO measures 50 to 99 ppm over a three to five minute period. An audible alarm and red LED flashing alarm are activated when levels immediately exceed 99ppm when detected. It can also be connected to an external annunciator light if the unit is installed visually.

Guardian CO also makes the Guardian 152WD, a lightweight portable CO detector that plugs into an airplane cigarette lighter socket.

Car & Aircraft Carbon Monoxide

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a toxic, odorless, and tasteless gas produced by the incomplete combustion of gasoline, kerosene, natural gas, butane, propane, heating oil, wood, coal, and other fossil fuels. Dangerous levels of CO can be produced by internal combustion engines or any poorly ventilated or improperly adjusted fuel combustion device. Exposure to CO can cause illness, headaches or even death.

This carbon monoxide detector saves a pilot's life, especially when flying with the heater on, as the dot turns gray/black when CO is in the air by warning of the presence of CO in the cabin. The spot on the detector will return to normal color after exposure to fresh air.

You can use this CO detector as your personal and portable CO detection device. Stick to adhesive on a panel or dash for semi-permanent installation, or wear on an ID badge or lanyard. Unopened CO detectors have a shelf life of 3 years, as indicated by the expiration date on the packaging. Once removed from the packaging, the CO detector will last for up to 12 months. Uses include:

CAUTION: The detector will be damaged by the presence of halogens (iodine, chlorine, bromine), alcohol, ammonia or nitrous gases. Do not use near diesel engines. Harsh direct sunlight will bleach the indicator art and shorten the useful life.
